Artist Statement and Bio (2025)

When I paint, I lose myself in the act of creation, in the selection of bright colors, and in the vivid forms that emerge from my imagination. I have always enjoyed creating new works, beginning with oil portraits of family members, then jewelry making, stained glass works, painting furniture, and faux walls for Newport RI residents. I sought out mentors and teachers to learn techniques and to explore color and form in my studio in Providence, RI.

I live and work full-time as an artist.  I have exhibited in several galleries in New England, including Gallery Z, Studio Z, (Providence, RI), Hope Gallery (Bristol, RI),  Mill Gallery (Pawtucket), Art Space and Time Gallery (online gallery where I received an honorary award), and at high-end contemporary interior design showrooms like Summer Thornton Design and BlythebyDesign, and in online magazines like Houzz.com. My painting “Lips” was selected by the Santa Fe Opera Company to be the official portrait for their production of “Carmen” in 2014, and was featured in Crescendo: The Magazine of the Santa Fe Opera Company..

While I am largely self-taught, with courses taken in Barrington, Newport and Providence, RI, I find myself attracted to the discovery of color and form in abstract expressionism.  I find that I have instinctively followed an abstract expressionist approach, and I have never been concerned with line.  My paintings create a bold statement yet demonstrate a classic style.  In my studio, I am constantly changing my mind about this color, that form, or the location of this object here or there.

I am often drawn to the landscape as a starting point, or, alternatively, to the human figure in its basic form surrounded by color, light, movement, depth and emotion.  For me, inspiration comes from many sources in the real world, and in the visual imagination of those who have gone before me.
